Reflections

When I need to clear my mind and find some space, I head for the beach.

Silverdale is one of Lancashire’s hidden gems. It’s not a typical bucket and spade beach as it opens out onto the sandy mudflats of Morecambe Bay. I have been visiting it since I was a child and it’s a place I always feel at home in.

It’s a beautiful place to exercise dogs and free the mind.

Time and space to reflect

Always check the tide times before venturing out onto the Sands. The sea comes in very quickly, and numerous people have got stranded when the sea floods in around them. Also, watch out for areas of very soft mud that you may sink into.

Flowers in the bay

There are numerous coastal and woodland walks in the area, a mobile coffee shop on the beach and a pub with a beer garden nearby.

Silverdale is part of the Silverdale and Arnside Area of Outstanding National Beauty. Close by is the Leighton Moss RSPB Nature Reserve.

The area traces its history back to Anglo Saxon times, and the finding of a Viking hoard of silver shows their interest in the area. The railway station opened in 1857, connecting tourists and prosperous industrialists to use the area as a rural retreat. It’s now a quiet village that, even at the height of summer, never seems to get too busy.
